Sloppy Joe’s

1 1/2 pounds ground beef ($2.24)

1 large yellow onion, chopped ($0.37)

4 large garlic cloves (not the whole head, just the cloves) ($0.10)

3 tablespoons chili powder ($0.05)

60z ale or beer ($0.50)

3/4 cup ketchup ($0.25)

1 4-ounce can diced green chilies ($0.89)

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (~$0.10)

8 hamburger buns, split, toasted ($1.00)

2 cups shredded lettuce (1/2 head) ($0.79)

Total: $5.50

Brown ground beef, onion, and garlic and sauté until beef is no longer pink, breaking up meat with back of fork, about 10 minutes.  Drain fat.  Mix in chili powder; stir 1 minute. Add next 4 ingredients. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until mixture thickens, stirring often, about 15 minutes.  Season with salt and pepper.

Arrange bun bottoms on plates. Spoon sloppy joe mixture over; top with lettuce and bun tops.

Serve with chips or fries.
